Soccer's 25th Year Team

The 2023 season is the 25th year of existence for the Texas State soccer program. In recognition, a 25-year team has been selected by a fan vote.

Eleven former Bobcats were selected to the team that consists of four midfielders, three forwards, three defenders and one goalkeeper.

Forwards
Allison Crain (2000-03)

In her four years in San Marcos, Allison Crain played in 81 matches and started 72 of them. She wrapped up her TXST career with 31 goals, which at the time was the most in program history and is currently third most. The Corpus Christi, Texas native had two seasons of 10 goals with them coming her freshman and senior campaigns. Of her 31 tallies, 13 were match-winners with a career-high five coming in 2000.

Crain totaled 13 assists and finished with 75 points as a Bobcat that were the most in team history when she completed her collegiate career. Her point mark remains the second most in program history and she is also second with 244 shots and 134 shots on goal.

As a freshman in 2000, Crain was selected to the All-Southland Second Team. She would then find her name on the conference's first team her final three years.

Texas State claimed three conference titles in her tenure. Crain helped the Bobcats win the 2001 Southland Conference regular season and tournament crowns and the regular season championship in 2002.

Britney Curry (2007-10)
Britney Curry had an extraordinary career in the maroon and gold. From Cypress, Texas, she holds the program's career records with 53 goals, 18 match-winning goals and 123 points. Her 17 assists rank second and she is third with 228 shots and 126 shots on frame.

Curry continues to hold the team's single season record for points with 43 that was achieved in 2009 while her 18 goals that season are tied for the most. She is the only TXST player to have three seasons in the top 10 in goals, match-winning goals and points. In all four years in San Marcos, Curry led the team in goals scored and is the only player to do so.

A four-time All-Southland selection, Curry was named to the second team her freshman season and earned first time honors over the next three campaigns. She was twice named to the Southland's All-Tournament Team (2009 & 2010) and was chosen as the league's Player of the Year in 2009. Her senior year saw her become the first Bobcat to earn all-region honors when she was chosen to the United Soccer Coaches All-Central Third team.

Curry helped Texas State lift three conference trophies during her tenure. The first two came in 2008 as the team won both the regular season and tournament titles and then claimed the 2009 regular season championship.

Kaylee Davis (2017-19)
After playing her freshman season at Sam Houston, Kaylee Davis transferred to Texas State and had an immediate impact on the program. She scored seven goals, all coming in Sun Belt Conference play, and assisted on two others to be honored as the conference's Newcomer of the Year and named to the league's first team.

Davis followed with an 18-goal campaign in 2018, tying the Bobcats' single-season record and finishing tied for third in the nation, and set a new team record with seven match-winning goals. She was chosen as the Sun Belt's Offensive Player of the Week a record four times during the season. The conference also recognized her as the league's Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and to the first team while also picking up all-tournament team accolades as she helped the Bobcats claim the regular season championship and reach the finals of the Sun Belt tournament.

The United Soccer Coaches named Davis to its All-Southeast First Team and became the first-ever Bobcat to be chosen to the organization's Scholar All-American Team, being picked to the third team. Her performance in the classroom and on the field saw the Texas State Athletic Department recognize her as the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Prior to the start of her senior season, Davis became the first player in program history to be named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and the Senior CLASS Award Candidate List. She would go on to finish the year with eight goals and three assists to be named to the All-Sun Belt First Team for the third time. Davis was twice named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week during the campaign, giving her a league record six weekly honors during her career.

Davis would again earn United Soccer Coaches All-Region (All-Southeast Third Team) and Scholar All-Region (All-West Second Team) honors. She is the only player in program history to earn all-region and scholar all-region accolades twice.

Overall, Davis would claim 18 individual awards in her career to rank as the second most in program history.

Midfielders
Kelsey Bernard (2008-11)

A four-year starter in the midfield, Kelsey Bernard made a program record 82 starts. She was also on the pitch for 6,800 minutes that ranks as the third most in team history.

During her time in San Marcos, Bernard scored four goals and was credited with eight assists. Her best statistical season came in 2010 when she totaled three goals and four assists.

Bernard was a three-time All-Southland selection as she was twice named to the second team and earned first team honors in 2009. She also picked up Southland All-Academic honors three times (2009-11) and was twice selected to the league's all-tournament team. Her senior season saw her be chosen to the United Soccer Coaches All-Central Third Team.

A native of The Colony, Texas, she was a part of the only class in program history to win at least 12 matches all four years. Bernard helped the Bobcats win a team record tying 14 contests in both 2009 and 2011 with the later campaign seeing TXST advance to the NCAA Tournament. Overall, Texas State claimed four conference championships with Bernard on the squad with regular season crowns in 2008 and 2009 and tournament titles in 2008 and 2011.

Sydney Curry (2010-13)
Sydney Curry played in 71 matches as a Bobcat and started 52 of them on her way to totaling 3,696 minutes on the pitch. She finished her career with 11 goals, two of them match-winners, and four assists while attempting 106 shots and placing 50 on frame.

Playing in three different conferences in her career, she was twice named to the Sun Belt's Commissioner's List and once to both the Southland and WAC All-Academic Teams.

Curry helped Texas State reach the NCAA Tournament in 2011 after claiming the Southland Conference Tournament championship.

Reta Derouin (2000-01)
A two-year letterwinner for the Bobcats, Rita Derouin was the soccer program's first-ever inductee into the Texas State Hall of Honor with it coming in 2021. She totaled 13 goals and five assists in her time in San Marcos with her best individual season coming in 2001 when the British Columbia, Canada native lead the team with nine goals.

Derouin became the first player in team history to be named as a conference's Player of the Year as she received the award in 2001. That same campaign she was also an All-Southland First Team selection. The year prior, she was chosen as the league's Newcomer of the Year and was a second team pick. Both seasons saw her make the Southland's All-Tournament Team and took home MVP honors in 2001.

Her senior season saw the Bobcats win a program record 14 contests, which has been matched twice (2008 & 2011) and record a team record 10 conference victories on the way to claiming both the Southland regular season and tournament championships.

Upon graduating from Texas State, Derouin began a three-year stint as an assistant coach with the Bobcats. As a member of the coaching staff, she helped TXST win the 2002 regular season champion and the 2004 SLC Tournament title in route to the Bobcats' third NCAA Tournament appearance.

Rachel Grout (2014-17)
Rachel Grout totaled 16 goals, 11 assists and six match-winning goals in 73 matches spanning 4,320 minutes on the pitch as a Bobcat. Coming off the bench for all 20 matches her freshman season, she finished as the team's third leading scorer with four goals and added two assists while placing 10 of her 15 shot attempts on frame.

After combining for four goals and three assists over her sophomore and junior years, Grout had a breakout campaign in 2017. She finished tied for the team lead with eight goals and six assists, tied for eighth most in TXST history, in helping the Bobcats finish runner-up in the Sun Belt Conference after being picked seventh in the preseason poll.

The Dallas, Texas native chosen to the 2017 All-Sun Belt First Team and was named to the league's Commissioner's List for the fourth time that year.

Nationally, Grout was selected to the College Sports Communicators (then CoSIDA) Academic All-American Third Team in 2017. She became just the second player in program history to receive the prestigious accolade. The United Soccer Coaches also named her to the All-South Third Team and the Scholar All-West Second Team.

In the spring of 2018, Texas State pick Grout as the school's Female Scholar-Athlete of Year.

Defenders
Marva Bailey (1999-02)

Marva Bailey played and started all 81 possible matches during the first four years of the program's existence. She is one of only four players in Texas State history to start 80 contests. On the pitch, she finished with two goals and four assists while helping the Bobcats' backline record 31 shutouts.

Bailey's performance on the pitch saw her be named to the All-Southland First Team four times. On three occasions, she was chosen to the SLC All-Tournament Team.

Three championships were won during Bailey's time with the team as they won both the regular season and tournament crowns in 2001. The Bobcats also won the 1999 SLC Tournament in the program's first year competing, which is the last time an NCAA Division I program reached the NCAA Tournament in the first year of existence.

Sarah Buchrucker (1999-02)
Sarah Buchrucker played four years for the Bobcats in which she played in all 81 possible matches and started 74 of them. The lone point of her career was an assist that she earned on Sept. 10, 2001, in a 3-0 victory over Nicolls.

The Arlington, Texas native was a two-time All-Southland Second Team selection, picked up SLC All-Tournament Team honors in 2001 and was named to the league's All-Academic Team in 2002. During her tenure, she helped the Bobcats pick up three conference titles and make two NCAA Tournament appearances.

Buchrucker was twice chosen to the College Sports Communicators Academic (then CoSIDA) All-District First Team, one of only three players in program history to earn the honor. In 2002, she became the first player to be named a CSC Academic All-American when she was named to the second team and would be the only player in program history to receive the accolade until 2017.

Chandler Cooney (2014-17)
In her four years with Texas State, Chandler Cooney competed in 66 matches with 53 starts, all of them consecutive to conclude her collegiate career. She played 5,132 minutes on the pitch and recorded three straight seasons of at least 1,530 minutes of action as a center back.

Cooney was part of backlines that recorded 23 shutouts and helped the Bobcats posted three seasons of 10 or more victories. As a senior in 2017, she helped the team finish runner-up in the regular season standings after being picked to finish seventh in the Sun Belt's preseason poll.

Twice Cooney was an All-Sun Belt pick with second team honors in 2015 and a first team selection in 2017. Her senior campaign saw her also be chosen to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-West Second Team and All-South Region Third Team. A CSC All-District Second Team accolade was also bestowed upon her during her senior season.

Goalkeeper
Heather Martin (2016-19)

Heather Martin put together and astounding career between the posts in the maroon and gold. She holds the career record for goals against average at 0.73 and save percentage at .858, while ranking second with 279 saves, 34 wins, 22 shutouts and 5,636 minutes played.

The Midlothian, Texas native holds the two lowest season GAA and save percentage marks in program history. In 2018, she had a 0.45 GAA and a .919 save percentage that are both the program records. Her save percentage mark was the second best in the nation and was one save shy of leading the country. She followed with a 0.47 GAA and .893 save percentage her senior year. Martin also set a new TXST record with nine shutouts in 2018 and followed with seven the next season.

In 2018, she helped lead the Bobcats to their first-ever Sun Belt Conference Regular Season Championship. Martin was chosen as the league's Defensive Player of the Year that season to become the first player in program history to receive the award regardless of conference affiliation.

Martin's 19 individual awards she received in her playing career made her the most decorated Bobcat in program history. Those honors include being a two-time All-Sun Belt First Team selection and chosen as the conference's Defensive Player of the Week seven times, the most of any TXST player with the previous best being two. She joined fellow teammate Kaylee Davis as being chosen to the Senior CLASS Award Candidate List for the 2019 season.

With her performance on the pitch and in the classroom, Martin was a two-time College Sports Communicators (then CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team selection. She would turn those into Academic All-American honors with a first team selection in 2019 and was a second team pick in 2018. Martin became just the second-ever female Bobcat student-athlete to earn multiple Academic All-America honors and the seven all-time overall at TXST.

Martin was chosen as The Texas State University System Foundation 2019 Regents' Student Scholar Award recipient. The award is selected by the chancellor based on outstanding academic achievement and scholarship, leadership abilities and contributions to the institution and their community. She is the only student-athlete in the history of the Texas State Athletic Depart to receive the accolade.
