I saw there wasn't a thread started in here so I just wanted to take this time to say The Shade is the best bar on the square. Never overly crowded but also never dead. It's hidden on the roof of Black Rabbit with a nice view of San Marcos. $1 Dos on Monday's was a staple for my MNF viewing last season. There's a roof and heaters but it's mainly an outside bar so avoid if you don't like smoke. The main bartender, Robbie, sports an un-ironic mullet, which is also greatly appreciated. He's been there for years. Does a great job.
