From Gridiron to Courtroom: Walter Musgrove’s Journey as Athlete, Lawyer, and Agent
SAN MARCOS– Walter Musgrove, a former two-time All-American cornerback and safety at Texas State University, has practiced as a certified NFL/NBA agent and personal injury lawyer in Dallas for fourteen years.
He is the founder of Musgrove Agency and earned an English degree from Texas State in 2005 before pursuing his law degree at Tulane University Law School, known for its competitiveness. This marked his first experience focusing solely on academics without athletic commitments, which he found beneficial given his background as a student-athlete.
“I developed really good time management skills as a student-athlete,” Musgrove said. “While my classmates were stressed, I didn’t have to practice anymore. I had plenty of time.”
His disciplined approach as a student-athlete contributed to his success in law school. In 2010, Musgrove officially became a lawyer and agent, fulfilling his aspiration to work closely with sports through his legal career. Becoming a lawyer or obtaining a master’s degree are prerequisites for becoming an NFL agent.
Following law school, Musgrove established Musgrove Agency, balancing representation of professional athletes with running his own practice. He credits his mindset cultivated during his time at Texas State for this dual role.
“One of the reasons I’ve enjoyed success after football is because of the academic sacrifices I made while playing,” Musgrove said. “If you make those sacrifices while you’re in school, your life will be better after football.”
The academic sacrifices Musgrove made were evident, as he was awarded Academic All-American honors three times.
Alongside his professional endeavors, Musgrove has a 7-on-7 youth football team in the Dallas area. He hosts the Musgrove Agency Invitational 7-on-7 tournament every year. His law degree has afforded him the flexibility to pursue his passion for sports.
“I’m most proud of using my law degree to create a lifestyle that allows me to pursue my passion, which is being involved in the game of football,” Musgrove said.
During his tenure at Texas State, Musgrove was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and suffered a broken collarbone. He underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy, with his Christian faith proving helpful during this period. Additionally, the fan support and his connections at Texas State aided in his recovery.
“The Texas State community, including the coaches, played a crucial role in my recovery,” Musgrove said. “I am always appreciative of that.”
In his first game back following his injury and cancer treatment, Musgrove made a significant play on the very first play of the game, causing a fumble. This moment was a testament to his determination and resilience.
“The doctors said there was no way I was going to be able to play because I was diagnosed in December,” Musgrove said. “Now fast forward to August, the first game of the season. I’ve undergone my chemo radiation and I’ve returned to my starting role.”
A coach who played a pivotal role in Musgrove’s development as a player was Coach Washington, his position coach at cornerback.
“He was very energetic, very honest,” Musgrove said. “He was a great communicator, and that’s something that I try to carry forward with the people that I’m leading.”
Musgrove specializes in personal injury cases at Musgrove Agency. He is currently expanding his practice, aiming to add several lawyers to handle litigation work, allowing him to focus on client service.
“What I enjoy is talking and working with clients, explaining the law to clients,” Musgrove said. “That’s where I’m really effective, and it has helped me grow and build my practice.”
At his core, Musgrove is a competitive individual, a trait honed during his athletic career and pivotal in his professional endeavors as a lawyer and agent.
Musgrove has had the pleasure of representing several NFL players, including Laviska Shenault, Gemon Green, Ty Nsekhe, Buddy Johnson, and Braylon Bell, among others. Musgrove is also a certified NBA agent but has not yet signed an NBA client.
“Everybody competes for clients as lawyers,” Musgrove said. “It’s the same in the NFL, but even more so because there are only 1,800 NFL clients.”
Musgrove’s determination and competitive spirit have been crucial to his success, evident from his academic achievements to his undefeated record in the courtroom, having won every trial since his first.
“Losing is just not an option,” Musgrove said. “It’s not happening.”
Simultaneously, alongside his proven track record in the courtroom, Musgrove prioritizes customer service in his practice. Regardless of the significance of a client’s case, he always ensures a professional experience by establishing a personal relationship with them.
Musgrove’s drive for success in his professional career underscores the hard work and sacrifices he made as a student at Texas State.
