Texas FBS Power Ranking: Week 1

This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.

Texas – UT had a good showing against Louisiana Tech. They were expected to win and they took care of business. Final score: 45-14

Texas A&M – Similar to UT, A&M was supposed to win against TXST. They had the game in control from beginning to end and took care of business. Final score: 41-7

TCU – TCU faced an FCS opponent and while not a lot can be determined through these types of games, they took care of business and got a win. Final score: 39-7

Baylor – Baylor also faced an FCS opponent. Once again, the outcome was to be expected. Final score: 56-17

Texas Tech – Tech took care of their FCS opponent with no problem. Final score: 45-10

University of Houston – UH looked to be outmatched early as they gave up the first 21 points of the game to OU. Fortunately for them, they made some adjustments and brought the game back to an 11 point deficit before surrendering the final TD to OU. Final score: 49-31

SMU – This one surprised me. They took a good Arkansas State team to the wire and pulled it off. SMU outscored stAte 21-7 through the last quarter and a half to seal the win. Final score: 37-30

University of North Texas – UNT also faced an FCS opponent and while the final score looks somewhat close, this one was never in doubt. UNT scored the first 31 points of the game before letting Abilene Christian sneak back into the game and make it look more respectable. Final score: 51-31

UTSA – Took care of their FCS opponent without a problem. Final score: 35-7

Texas State – Lost to A&M. Defense performed well and seemed to frustrate the Aggies offense at times. Unfortunately, the new Spavital/Stitt offense was not very effective against the Aggies defense. Final score: 41-7

Rice – Rice was probably the most surprising game on the list. While it was a losing effort, they took a good Army team to the wire and only lost by a TD. They are likely to be improved this year and jumped UTEP for that reason. Final score: 14-7

UTEP – UTEP dropped on this list for their narrow win against an FCS opponent. It took a field goal midway through the 4th to regain the lead and an HBU fumble to seal the win. Final score: 36-34
