Texas FBS Power Ranking: Week 12

This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.

Baylor – Baylor looked like the real deal in the first half against OU building a 31-10 lead heading into halftime. Unfortunately for them, they forgot that a football game is 60 minutes. The Bears went on to get shut out in the 2nd half and allowed OU to come all the way back for a 34-31 win. Despite the loss, Baylor is still the best in Texas up till now. Final Score: 34-31

SMU – Bye Week

Texas A&M – A&M continued building on their win streak pushing it to 4 after their loss to Alabama earlier in the season. This week, it was a win over in conference opponent South Carolina. The Aggies were favored by 10.5 and had no problem covering. Final Score: 30-6

TCU – TCU outlasted Texas Tech this week after narrowly avoiding a comeback attempt from the Red Raiders. TCU built a 24-3 lead before allowing Tech to go on a 25-3 run that gave Tech the lead heading into the 4th quarter. The two traded field goals the rest of the way out with TCU coming out on top. Final Score: 33-31

Texas – After Texas beat KSU on a last second field goal last week, ISU returned the favor beating Texas on a last second field goal this week. UT was down as much as 20-7 heading into the 4th quarter. They were able to mount a comeback bid by scoring 14 unanswered to take the lead 21-20 with a little over 5 minutes left. Unfortunately, they couldn’t hold on and ISU drove down the field with a 9 play 63 yard drive culminating in a game winning field goal. Final Score: 21-23

Texas Tech – Tech lost a close one against TCU this week. They were down big early, but mounted a failed comeback as they couldn’t close it out in the 4th quarter. Final Score: 33-31

University of Houston – In a game UH was the underdog by 9.5 points in, they looked good until about 4 minutes until halftime. UH had a lead of 20-14 with just 4:21 left in the first half before giving up 31 unanswered points to Memphis. Houston wasn’t able to overcome it and lost their 7th game of the season eliminating them from bowl eligibility. Final Score: 45-27

UNT – Bye Week

Texas State – Coach Spavital lauded Troy’s high powered offense comparing it to the Big12 style of play. They knew it could turn into a high scoring shootout. Unfortunately, the Bobcats just aren’t ready for that type of game. Add in the 4 interception game by Tyler Vitt and it was a recipe for disaster. It doesn’t get any easier next week as the Bobcats face a ranked App State team on the road. Final Score: 63-27

UTSA – The Roadrunners continue to have an almost mirror like season to the Bobcats. This week, they lost a game against a good USM team that was favored by 17. UTSA held tough through the first half, but were only able to muster 1 TD in the second half as USM pulled away. Final Score: 36-17

Rice – The Owls got their first victory of the season! It was only a matter of time. As I mentioned earlier in the season, the Owls were a much better team than their record indicated. This week’s victory came against a Middle Tennessee team that entered the game favored by 13.5 points. Rice was able to build a 31-14 lead heading into halftime and were able to hold on through the second half. Final Score: 31-28

UTEP – UTEP was playing a good UAB team and this one was never in doubt. The Blazers got out to an early 23-0 lead and never looked back. Final Score: 37-10
