This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.
Baylor – Baylor got the win over Texas at home this week bouncing back from their loss last week to OU. This game solidified their ranking as the best in Texas barring a surprise upset next week against Kansas. The Bears now get to look forward to a rematch against OU in the Big12 Championship game. Final Score: 24-10
Texas A&M – A&M lost to #4 Georgia this week. That loss drops them to 7-4 on the season. However, all 4 losses were to top 10 teams at the time they played. While they don’t have any marquee wins, they also don’t have any bad losses. Their 4 losses came to teams ranked #1, #8, #1, and #4 at the time they played. While they themselves aren’t a top 10 team, evidenced by their losses, they are also not as bad as their record would indicate. They are victims of a brutal SOS. Despite the tough schedule, they continue to play top ranked teams close. Final Score: 19-13
SMU – Had SMU not lost to Navy this week, they may have been able to keep their number 2 ranking in the state. However, they now have loses to #18 Memphis and an unranked Navy team. Their overall record and strength of schedule just doesn’t compare to A&M at this point. Final Score: 35-28
TCU – Despite being severely behind in total yards, first downs, and time of possession, TCU had several chances down the stretch to take the lead against OU. The Horned Frogs scored 10 points off of 3 turnovers and were down by just 4 points from 12:43 till the end of the game. Unfortunately, their offense wasn’t able to get the ball in the endzone and they fell just short of what would have been a huge upset. Final Score: 28-24
Texas – UT’s offense looks to have taken a huge step backwards throughout the season. This doesn’t look like the same team that was able to put up 38 on #1 LSU or even the same team that faced Oklahoma and put up 27. Tom Herman has his work cut out for him to figure out what went wrong in a season that started with CFP hopes. Final Score: 24-10
Texas Tech – Tech trailed the entire game against Kansas State, but never by more than 10 points. Heading into the 4th quarter the deficit was just 6, but the Red Raiders weren’t able to get the stops when necessary to pull ahead. Final Score: 30-27
University of Houston – UH outlasted Tulsa in a close game this week. The Cougars were able to put a nail in it when they returned a kickoff for a touchdown and followed it up with a turnover on downs and 2 forced fumbles. Final Score: 24-14
Texas State – While TXST lost again this week, they looked much improved over last week. They were facing an App State team ranked #24 in the College Football Playoff invitational ranking system (#22 in the Coaches Poll). Despite the long odds (28.5 point underdogs), the Bobcats gave App State all they could handle. It wasn’t until the 4th quarter when App State finally put the game away. The Bobcats are playing for pride at this point of the season and that makes next week’s match up against Coastal Carolina even more important. A win gives the Bobcats their highest win total in a single season since 2014. Final Score: 35-13
Rice – Rice gets their 2nd win of the season against a struggling UNT team. Rice’s strength of schedule is significantly higher than UNT and UTSA. They also did not play an FCS game this year. The UTSA game is a bad mark on their record, but they seem to have improved since then and that game is looking more and more like a fluke as the season goes on. The Owls have a chance to finish the season on a 3 game winning streak as they face UTEP in the final game of the season. Final Score: 20-14
UNT – UNT is officially out of bowl contention as they picked up their 7th loss of the season on Saturday when they faced Rice. While Rice is trending up, UNT is clearly trending down. They have lost 5 of their last 7 and will play underdog in their final game of the year against division leader UAB. Final Score: 20-14
UTSA – UTSA lost to FAU at home this week. The Roadrunners scored 15 points in the 4th to make the final score more respectable, but this one was over long before that. The game got out of hand quickly as FAU built a 27-3 lead and that was too much for UTSA to overcome. The Roadrunners will be big underdogs next week too as they travel to Ruston, LA to take on Louisiana Tech for the final game of the season. Final Score: 40-26
UTEP – UTEP was playing a good UAB team and this one was never in doubt. The Blazers got out to an early 23-0 lead and never looked back. Final Score: 37-10
