Texas FBS Power Ranking: Week 14

This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.

This is also the final ranking of the season since the only teams playing from here on out are conference champions or bowl teams.

Baylor – Baylor left no doubt in their final regular season game against Kansas. The Bears had a very unexpected season, finishing with just 1 loss to OU. They will however get the opportunity for revenge as they will meet OU in the Big12 Championship. Final Score: 61-6

SMU – SMU finished the regular season with a win against Tulane as they rebounded from a loss against Navy the week before. The Mustangs also had a very surprising season that saw them ranked for the first time in many years. Final Score: 37-20

Texas A&M – I mentioned in the last installment of our ranking that the Aggies moved up in the rankings partly due to how close they had been playing top ranked teams. That was not the case for the Aggies against LSU though. A&M did not look good against an LSU team known more for their offense this season than their defense. LSU’s offense didn’t disappoint, but A&M’s did. Final Score: 50-7

TCU – TCU dropped a close one to West Virginia to finish the season 5-7. This is just the second time the Horned Frogs have failed to make a bowl game in the last 15 years. The other time being 2013. Final Score: 20-17

Texas – UT should be ranked higher on this list, but they have been too inconsistent to maintain a high ranking this season. This season saw the Longhorns play LSU and OU within 1 possession each, but also lose to TCU and Iowa State. This week they beat Texas Tech soundly. Final Score: 49-24

Texas Tech – After Texas Tech’s loss to the Longhorns this week, they dropped to 4-8 and finished the season on a 3 game losing streak. Outside of their lone signature win against a ranked Oklahoma State, this was a bad season for the Red Raiders. Final Score: 49-24

University of Houston – UH finished their season with a loss as well. This season saw their star QB decide to redshirt and sit the rest of the season out in hopes of a better season next year. It will be interesting to see if it pays off for the Cougars and new HC Dana Holgorsen. One thing is for sure, for an athletic department willing to fire a coach because 8 wins wasn’t enough, they can’t be too happy with their investment into Holgorsen at this point. Final Score: 56-41

Rice – Rice was able to finish the season strong with a win against UTEP. The Owls finished the year on a 3 game winning streak as they finally found a way to win games. This team finally seems to be heading in the right direction. Final Score: 30-16

Texas State – TXST lost a close game against Coastal Carolina this week. They fell just short as they missed 2 field goals and lost by 3 points. The Bobcats offense never did find any sense of consistency this year. With a few coaching changes on the offensive side of the ball including OC Bob Stitt, the Bobcats will look to change that in year 2 under Spavital. Final Score: 24-21

UNT – While Rice finished the season strong on a 3 game win streak, UNT had the exact opposite finish to the season as they lost their final 3 games. This week was a loss to UAB. This was another team that had a surprising season, but unfortunately for the Mean Green, not in a good way. Final Score: 26-21

UTSA – UTSA also had a let down of a season, losing 4 of their last 5. This week was a loss against Louisiana Tech. After another losing season under Frank Wilson, the Roadrunners decided to make some changes and are now looking for a new head coach. Final Score: 41-27

UTEP – With the loss to Rice this week, UTEP’s sole win of the season was to an FCS team that finished 5-7 and in 10th place in the Southland. Even that game was only won by a last second fumble recovery to prevent HBU from kicking the game winning field goal. UTEP left no doubt who should finish in last place as the worst FBS team in Texas. The good news for the Miners, they can only go up from here. Final Score: 30-16
