Texas FBS Power Ranking: Week 7

This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.

Texas – The Red River Rivalry! One of the best rivalries in the country. It came down to an onside kick for Texas to have a shot at taking this one into overtime. Unfortunately for the Longhorns, they just couldn’t come up with the ball to keep their upset hopes alive. Final Score: 34-27

SMU – Bye Week

Baylor – Baylor took on Texas Tech this week and found a way to win. I’ve always been a big proponent of the saying “good teams find ways to win.” They may not be the best in the country, or even the best on this list, but as long as they continue winning, they will continue to hold their spot. This one took an 11 play 89 yard drive in just 1:37 to tie it up and force overtime. The Bears won in OT. Final Score: 33-30

Texas A&M – A&M came out looking strong against the #1 team in the country, Alabama. They opened the game with an 8 minute, 15 play, 75 yard drive capped with a touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead. Things looked positive until 4 minutes later when Alabama answered with a touchdown of their own. Unfortunately, Alabama didn’t look back and never lost the lead the rest of the way out. The Aggies are now just .500 on the season, but their losses are against then #1 Clemson, #8 Auburn, and current #1 Alabama. For that reason, they aren’t dropping on our list. Final Score: 47-28

Texas Tech – Tech was close to pulling off the upset against undefeated #22 Baylor. At one point, according to the ESPN win probability graphic, Texas Tech had a 90.6% probability to win with just 1:37 left to play. Tech couldn’t come up with the stop they needed to close out the game and lost in OT. Final Score: 33-30

TCU – Bye Week

University of Houston – UH lost to #25 Cincinnati this week. Statistically, this game looked very close and UH even brought it within one possession in the 4th quarter and had a couple chances to tie or take the lead. The difference, UH had 5 turnovers compared to Cinci’s 1. Final Score: 38-23

University of North Texas – UNT lost to Southern Miss and dropped to just 2-4 on the season. UNT was able to keep it close through the first half, but USM ended up pulling away and never looked back in the third quarter. Final Score: 45-27

Texas State – Texas State’s offense once again fell short in a hard fought defensive game. The Bobcats held ULM below most of their offensive averages including points scored at just 24. Unfortunately, the Bobcat offensive struggles continued to doom the Bobcats. Vitt finally got another chance to play when Jensen went out on concussion protocol and threw a TD pass on the very first play to give the Bobcats hope. The TD closed the deficit to just 3 points, 17-14 at the end of the third quarter. That was the closest the Bobcats would come as the next and final 3 drives ended with a punt, punt, and interception. Final Score: 24-14

UTSA – UTSA dropped another in conference game against a 5-1 UAB team to fall to 2-4 on the season also. This game was close through 3 quarters with UTSA just trailing 23-14 headed into the 4th quarter. However, UAB scored 10 unanswered in the 4th quarter to pull away. Final Score: 33-14

Rice – Bye Week

UTEP – Bye Week
