Texas State to Transition to Mobile App System for Athletic Event Access Starting Fall 2024

SAN MARCOS– Beginning in the fall semester of 2024, Texas State will implement a new system requiring students to use the TXST mobile app to scan a barcode on their phones for admission to athletic events.

The use of university IDs for entry will no longer be accepted but students will still receive free admission. This change is prompted by technological advancements throughout the universities sporting venues that will aid in faster entry, and the system will facilitate the transition of students to season ticket holders upon graduation. Associate athletic director, Lucas Westbrook, provides additional detail on the effect this transition will have.

“By integrating the ticketing process into the TXST APP, we align it with a platform already extensively utilized by students for various campus services,” Westbrook said. “This integration will enhance our ability to efficiently and effectively promote our athletic events.”

With the football season rapidly approaching, the new process may present initial challenges. However, it proved successful during tests at sporting events last season. If a student’s phone is dead or the app is inaccessible, the university will provide accommodations.

“Nonetheless, we will remain adaptable for students who may not have the app,” Westbrook said. “We will still allow them to claim tickets at the window.”

The new technology was tested last season as a trial run due to the large number of students who either did not have their IDs or whose magstripes had begun to fade.

While the new technology offers several benefits, it also presents some challenges. Instead of adding more ID scanners at the gates, the process now relies on students having access to a mobile app, which could create issues if students experience technical difficulties.

Although most young adults own a smartphone, there are occasional cases where a student may not have a phone or their phone may be dead, especially after tailgating. Although students can still access tickets at the window, they may face long lines.

The new technological advancements are expected to be successful, but it will take time for the system to run smoothly. Overall, these improvements are likely to enhance fan engagement and participation.
