As the quarterback race heats up, the offense looks for efficiency

As Fall Camp kicked off on Wednesday, who the starting quarterback will be was the question still lingering from Sun Belt Media Days.

The triple threat battle between Gresch Jensen, Tyler Vitt, and Jaylen Gipson has raged on since spring practice with no clear-cut starter. As the battle rages on, head football coach Jake Spavital continues to remain silent on the starting quarterback.

“Come on, you know I’m not going to do that,” Coach Spavital said jokingly to the media, referring to announcing a starter. “At least I kept it real with you guys on that one”.

Though everyone has been focused on the quarterback battle, Spavital remains focused on being efficient.

“I think these guys are in great physical shape,” Spavital said. “Now the emphasis has got to get turned to being a smart, efficient football team… you are going to hear me say that a million times.”

The sentiment was echoed by Offensive Coordinator Bob Stitt.

“Our defense is going to make plays because we got good players,” Stitt said. “But we cannot fail because it’s self-inflicted… it’s got be because the defense just made a play and disrupted it.”

“In the spring there was a lot of that,” Stitt continued. “So, it’s a lot of grinding, a lot of work, and a commitment to the playbook… they (players) got to spend all day on it (playbook) so they know exactly what they are doing, and they can play fast, and then go execute.”

On the other side of the ball, Defensive Coordinator Zac Spavital looks to add to what was arguably one of the best defenses in the Sun Belt Conference a season ago.

“We’ve still got to figure out how to win games” Spavital said. “And we’ve got to figure out how we can do that on the defensive side… our job is to give the offensive the ball or take the ball away to win the game, you know get a stop on that last drive.”

“It doesn’t matter at the end of the day what schemes you are calling,” Spavital continued, “That is my job to put them in those positions but we got to figure out how we can take those positions, capitalize on them, and win the game.”

Texas State kicks off the season August 29, 2019.
