The wait is over in San Marcos. For the first time since 2022, the Texas State Bobcats are heading back to the NCAA Tournament after earning an at-large bid in the 2026 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship field.
Texas State was selected Monday as part of the College Station Regional, where the Bobcats will face USC Trojans baseball in the opening round while regional host Texas A&M Aggies baseball takes on Lamar Cardinals baseball.
The selection caps a strong season for Texas State, which finished 36-24 overall and made a late push through the rugged Sun Belt Conference schedule. The Bobcats closed the regular season with a sweep of Marshall and carried momentum into the conference tournament, strengthening what had become one of the better at-large resumes in the country.
For weeks, Texas State sat squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. National projections from D1Baseball and other outlets consistently listed the Bobcats among the “last four in” teams thanks to a solid RPI, quality wins, and the challenge of navigating one of college baseball’s deepest mid-major conferences.
The Bobcats ultimately did enough to convince the selection committee. Texas State’s profile included a 16-14 conference record in the Sun Belt, a league that has become one of the nation’s premier baseball conferences and regularly sends multiple teams to regionals.
Now comes the opportunity that every team plays for: a shot at Omaha.
Texas State enters the College Station Regional as a dangerous lower seed capable of making life difficult for anyone in the bracket. The Bobcats have shown resilience throughout the season and possess the kind of experienced lineup and pitching depth that can create problems in a regional format.
The matchup with USC presents an immediate challenge, but it also offers a major opportunity. A win would likely set up a rematch with in-state power Texas A&M. Texas State faced Texas A&M twice this year, splitting the series 1-1 while winning the most recent game 9-8 at home.
For the program, the selection represents another important milestone as Texas State continues building its national baseball reputation. The Bobcats have steadily elevated themselves within the Sun Belt and across the college baseball landscape, and this postseason berth reinforces that progress.
Selection Sunday brought relief, celebration, and validation in San Marcos. Now the focus shifts to the road ahead — and whether Texas State can turn a tournament appearance into a memorable postseason run.
