I currently have the scholarship count at 75 for next year, meaning we are working with 10 more spots. Please feel free to correct anything you see that appears inaccurate and I'll update the list accordingly. Obviously this list is fluid and will have many changes before the start of the season. Roster Changes
*** 2024 roster update: Subtracting TJ Finley and Simon Gonzalez from the list above and re-adding Damarius Good who apparently removed his name from the roster. https://txst.com/sports/football/roster/2024

* eligibility should be exhausted, but he didn’t participate in Senior Night and he was injured all of 2019, so I assume they’re attempting to get a medical redshirt waiver

** eligibility should be exhausted, but I believe they’re getting a medical redshirt waiver for another season

Cj williams is listed as a sr but he could have earned a RS i guess?
If you click his profile, they have his 2022 season listed as “sophomore” which is more accurate given his career:

2020 - JUCO, free year
2021 - JUCO, freshman
2022 - TXST, sophomore
2023 - TXST, junior
2024 - TXST, senior

Been trying to tell y'all you can't trust those labels. Gotta count the years in and years played for yourself.

Holloway and Holton will obviously be missed but as it stands, we will be returning a lot of production on defense. Add in a couple more big pieces to go with the transfers we already got, and hopefully we’ll see some improvement on that side of the ball. First step is probably getting a new DC… Also, is Devin Martinez on scholarship?

One thing that stands out is both sides of the trenches could be in big “need” for the 2025 season.

Hopefully that is where the focus will be with the remaining 10-15 (or 20, with maybe more processing) bodies to round out this 2024 class with some sophomore transfers that get a year to gel (develop) before 25’.

We are in an age where you can’t count on any of these 24’ juniors with eligibility to return in 25’ as seniors because they have been in college long enough that they likely have enough credits to graduate. Looking at Ratcliff, Strawn, E. Obigbo, Harkey, Valenzuela, Scott, Juco I. Walker and K Washington. We won’t have the benefit of bringing in 5-6 UIW OL guys for 25’ that have already gelled together at previous school under our staff/system.

Regarding CJ Williams, he was actually a '19 graduate and did three years at juco. He played right at four games this season, so should have been able to use a redshirt and be a RS SR this season in his final year.

C.J. Williams - Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Athletics (mgcccbulldogs.com)

In the game notes, they do a cool feature of when each player's first year of college was then their first year at TXST. Also, in the game notes for the bowl, Simon Gonzalez was not on the roster (along with a majority of the transfers). Assume he has moved on.

Gonzalez has already transferred twice, so it would make sense that he wouldn’t enter the portal again if he just chose to move on from football. It’d be nice to have that scholarship available.

Here’s the list from Senior Day. Williams wasn’t listed, meaning they expected him to be back. It makes sense that he used his redshirt. Regardless, he’s counted as a scholarship player in the OP for 2024 but I’m not sure how much he’ll be contributing next season even with the additional year.

Got to get a mix of high school guys too. My concern with some transfers is they want to play ASAP and not develop for a year. But I fully agree losing the UIW guys will start to sting.

How do you know if someone is a walk-on? Surprised to see Jayden Smith on that list.

Here is our official 2024 transfer class. I’m sure we’ll add 1 or 2 more in the spring as some current guys leave.

CB Justin Harris - Cincy - Played 5 years for the Bearcats. Started for Cincy this year and was one of their two most prolific CBs. 31 tackles, 1 INT, 6 PD. Along with Alonzo Edwards and Josh Eaton, he’ll help replace Ford-Dement and Mills.

OL Issiah Walker - JUCO, former Colorado commit - Other offers from Colorado, Purdue, Syracuse, UNT, WKU, Buffalo, FAU, ULM, Marshall, CCU, Akron, NMSU, and UNM.

RB Jaylen Jenkins - Wazzu - Played 2 seasons at WSU. Had 500 total yards and 3 TDs as a true freshman last year. Dismissed from the program this year for “violating team rules.” Small scatback.

WR Jaden Williams - BC - Played 3 seasons at BC, totaling 578 yards and 7 TDs. Fast slot receiver from PVille.

S Ryan Nolan - JUCO - 1st Team All-American DB, who led all JUCO in INT (7) this year. Couldn’t get P5 offers because he’s a 5’9” safety, but held other offers from UNT, ODU, Buffalo, WKU, UMass, SHSU, MTSU, GaSo, Tulsa, Charlotte, GSU, USU, EMU, and many FCS schools.

LB - James Neal - UTEP - 2nd leading tackler for UTEP this year. 81 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 FR, and 2 PD this season. Out of the portal, he held offers from Ark State, WKU, La Tech, and MTSU.

CB - Latrez Moore - UTEP- Starting CB for UTEP in 2022 with 31 tackles, 1 FF, 4 PD. Only played in 4 games for UTEP in 2023, I assume to keep his redshirt. Should have 2 seasons remaining.

WR Beau Sparks - Utah Tech - Track star from El Paso. Put up 700+ yards & 7 TDs as a true freshman for UTU. He had 2600 yards & 36 TDs in HS as a junior & senior. Had a 7/62/2 TD game vs. Colorado State this year. Out of the portal, he held offers from 10+ FBS schools, although he deleted those announcements from twitter when he committed/signed.

LB Jordan Smith - JUCO - Held other offers from Liberty, ULM, UTEP, USU, and FCS. Led Navarro JUCO in tackles. 1st team all-conference.

CB Kameron Pearson - JUCO - Held other offers from GaSo, Ball State, Akron, Jacksonville St, and several FCS

DE Brice Bass - Gardner Webb - Started every game in 2022 and 2023 for GWU. In 3 years, he had 85 tackles, 18 TFLs, 9.5 sacks, 3 PD, 2 FF, 1 FR. Held other offers from Utah State, Coastal Carolina, Temple, App State, ODU, UNT, MTSU, and Georgia State.

LB Max Harris - UIW/ULM - leading tackler for ULM with 79. Multiple years of eligibility remaining.

OL Tellek Lockette - ULM - All conference OG. Instant starter.

TE Blake Smith - A&M/OU - never got much playing time but he was highly recruited out of HS and should contribute along with Konnor Fox in the TE room.

DE Steven Parker - KU/UIW - FCS All American DE. He led
their team in tackles for loss (14.5), sacks (7), quarterback hurries (6), and forced fumbles (3). Nationally, he was No. 10 for forced fumbles, No. 16 in tackles for loss and No. 25 in sacks.

DB Donte Thompson - UIW/Ark St - First Team All-Southland Conference in 2022. Had 17 PBUs. I believe he was able to use his redshirt at Ark State last year.

RB Torrance Burgess - UTEP - over 600 yards on 5+ YPC last year as a sophomore. I assume he’ll compete with Jaylen Jenkins for playing time as a change of pace back. It’a a room of smaller backs with Pare & Mahdi there too.

QB Jayden de Laura - WSU/UA - 63 passing TDs, former PAC freshman of the year. Over 8K passing yards in P5. Possible scumbag.

DL Alex Merritt - EMU - played 5 seasons for EMU, logging decent stats each year as an interior DL. Provides solid experience and depth, which you can never have too much of on the DL.

K Brandan Franke - Nebraska/GaSo - handled kickoff duties for his former teams.

DL Tunmise Adeleye - A&M/MSU - former 5 star with multiple years of eligibility remaining. Tallied nine tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss (7 yards) and 1.0 sack (4 yards), with one QB hurry in six games, logging 157 snaps for MSU as a RS SO this year.

Expect more attrition or graduation this spring for more ships to open up.

With the new RB i wonder if we are still after the HS kid. Cannot think of the name but he dis not sign anywhere on early signing and i think he would be a good get. I still want a big short yardage back as well. Although Jeter’s stats did not catch your eye, he was key on moving the chains for scoring drives and getting in the endzone on goal to go situations.

I would think so. Mahdi will be a junior, Pare is a senior or junior, recent transfers are juniors or sophs so it would make sense to get a HS RB from Westfield you are talkin about.

Updated OP to remove TJ Finley and Simon Gonzalez. https://txst.com/sports/football/roster/2024

I also re-added Damarius Good, who apparently rejoined the team despite previously entering the portal. Good catch, @2centsworth.

I have the count at 84 now, meaning we currently have a couple spots open. I still expect some of attrition through the Spring/Summer as players' roles get defined and guys look for playing time elsewhere or get encouraged to leave. We'll also have the opportunity to scoop up P5 players looking for PT at that time like we did last year with TJ Finley, Chance Main, etc.

Chris Mills is still on roster. I thought he was returning per Keff. Interesting they allowed Good to return. Will be interesting if they take another RB then.
