LUBBOCK, TX. — The Texas State track and field program will open its 2022 schedule on Friday, Jan. 14 after the Bobcats travel to Texas Tech to participate in the two-day Corky Classic event.
This weekend will mark the third consecutive season that Texas State has visited Lubbock for a track and field event hosted by Texas Tech. It'll also be the first track and field event for the Bobcats under first-year head coach John Frazier, who was hired on August 2, 2021. During his time at the helm of track and field programs, Frazier has produced an indoor national championship, 21 conference championships and developed 57 All-Americans, five NCAA champions and four Olympians.
WHO TO WATCH:
Ronnie Briscoe, Sr., Horizontal Jumps
Briscoe returns for his senior year after producing an All-American-caliber outdoor season in 2021. The Waco native earned NCAA Second-Team All-American honors after leaping 7.46 meters (24' 5.75") at NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships. Briscoe propelled a third-place finish in the long jump (7.31m, 23' 11.75") at the Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships into a career-long 7.71m (25' 3.5") jump at the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Round. Briscoe will be looking for his fourth consecutive All-Sun Belt Conference selection in the long jump event in 2022.
Alyssa Wilson, Grad., Thrower
Wilson joined the Texas State track and field program during the offseason after transferring from UCLA, where she was a six-time first-team All-American and three-time second-team All-American thrower in the shot put, weight throw, discus and hammer. Wilson's 241'11" hammer throw at the 2021 USA Olympic Trials was the fourth-best collegiate throw of all time. She was named the 2019 Pac-12 Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year and Women's Athlete of the Meet. In addition to the 2021 USA Olympic Trials, Wilson also qualified for the 2020 USA Indoor Championships, where she placed second in the weight throw.
