Just read over on Bobcat Fans that Dirtbag posted that Ty was retiring. Then posted again that it was confirmed.
Any scuttlebutt on this from anyone over here?

If so, I suppose it’ll make a lot of folks happy . . . not saying me, jus’ sayin’ a lot of folks.

If it is true, I hope it’s because he decided it was time, and not due to health issues.

UTA just locked their guy up for another 4 years.

Haven't heard that. He is 68 years old so thats a possibility. Obviously has had some health issues in the past too.

Until proven otherwise, I think he hit it out of the park with the Spavital hire. I really hope he does the same with the baseball hire.

Call Matt Deggs today. Throw as much $ at him as we can afford to. Call me I'll throw in a grand or two...

Deggs would be a nice hire for sure.

Imagine Teis would give Derek Matlock a look too. Wouldn't be my first choice, but if this indeed the case, I imagine Matlock is on the short list. Same with Jeremy Fikac.

Another out of the box hire would be. Kirk Saarloos. He would be on my shortlist too. No Texas State ties that I know of. Was in the running for the Rice job, is currently Pitching Coach at TCU.

Matlock deserves a look. He was a big part of some of our best Southland teams (2009-2011) and rumors are he was the primary recruiter for a lot of those guys on those teams. As a head man he's not ultra experienced, but he does have UTRGV moving in the right direction as they went 34-21 this year and were WAC regular season co-champs. They went just 23-31 his first year in 2018.

I'd pass on Fikac though. I don't even think he's coaching anymore. And he was essentially our head coach in 2015, which was our worst season since I started following this program in 2006. He got his test run, albeit in tough situations, and didn't fare well.

Great name to throw out on Saarloos. He'd be a great hire I think but may be some stiff competition to land him.

I'll throw out another local name to add to the list:
Pat Hallmark. He was at Rice under Wayne Graham and was in the mix to take over at Rice before Rice went with Matt Bragga from Tennessee Tech. Rice probably put too much stock into TN Tech's run to the super regionals last year though and Rice fans all wish they went with Hallmark in hindsight. Hallmark took the head job at Incarnate Word, who's never been any good, and went 29-26 his first year then went 37-22 this year. They also beat us this year, for the first time ever.

Hallmark would have to almost be on the list too. Yeah I would pass on Fikac too, just think he would be on a list of candidates.

Matlock is interesting, not much coaching experience, but like you said trending in the right direction. Thinking he would come back for a much lower price than we would get someone like Saarloos.

Matt Deggs looks good on paper and I like that he took Sam Houston to a regional and super regional recently... However, he has also gone 0-2 in two consecutive years of the Southland tournament to be eliminated and not make the tournament after winning the regular season. Maybe our season ending the way it did is still too fresh, but that concerns me.

Yeah they did exactly what we did this year. Went 0-2 as the 1 seed.
They did win one game at least in 2018 though, went 1-2 as the 1 seed.

Matt Deggs sounds like a great hire if Ty is indeed retiring. I've always liked Coach Harrington but he never seemed to get us over the hump.

My bad, I overlooked their win in the losers bracket that year.

Deggs has an interesting story. For those that don't know who watched that clip he was fired as an assistant from A&M and a lot of it was due to his drinking. He was out of coaching for a year before Louisiana hired him as their hitting coach. Louisiana was really, really good those years and if you go listen to the Cajuns fans talk a lot of them attribute their drop-off the last few years to losing Deggs. They credit him with a lot of their success in recruiting and development. Both of which have fallen off a cliff since he's left. Sam wasn't exactly bad or anything prior to Deggs getting there, they were already pretty good. But in 5 years he's won 40 games twice, has 3 Southland championships, two regional berths, and 1 super regional berth.
