Soccer Battles to Draw at Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – Playing its first road match outside of the Lone Star State, the Texas State soccer team (7-1-2, 1-0-1 Sun Belt) picked up a hard-earned point after playing to a 1-1 draw against Georgia Southern (1-2-5, 0-0-2 Sun Belt) Thursday night at Eagle Field.

For the first 15 minutes, the contest was dominated by the Eagles that were playing their first home match in 31 days as they maintained a possession in their offensive half. They took four shots and placed three on goal during that time. The most dangerous attempt came late in the 15th minute when a cross deflected to Kyleigh Drew. Her try from six yards out was sent right into Kamaria Williams to keep the ball out of the net.

The Bobcats would take three shots in the first half with two from Haley Shaw and one from Williams. However, neither attempt was able to be placed on frame.

GS broke the stalemate in the 58th minute on a counterattack. A pass from Drew found Emma Armstrong and she put it just out of the reach of Katelyn Chrisman.

The Eagles nearly added another tally three minutes later when a flick from a short distance via Armstrong went slightly wide of the right post.

Juana Plata sent in a corner kick from the near side at the end of the 68th minute. Addison Peters was able to beat her marker and knock the ball into the back of the to tie the match at 1-1 and record her second goal of the season.

The best chance for either team came with 15 minutes left on the clock. Kendall Wilson was able to get behind the TXST backline to receive a pass. Her shot attempt saw the ball go wide of the left post.

Zoe Junior and Shaw were the only Bobcats with multiple shots at two apiece as Texas State was limited to eight shots while the Eagles took 11. GS also put six of their tries on frame while TXST had just one, that being the goal.

Chrisman, the reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week, made four saves on the night.

Next up for the Bobcats is a home match on Sunday against ULM. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
