Texas FBS Power Ranking: Week 9

This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.

SMU – We have a new number one for the first time this season! No, you didn’t wake up in the early 1980’s either. SMU is really undefeated and comes in at the top of our list. I’ve said this in previous weeks, but SMU keeps finding ways to win. In previous weeks, it’s been the offense that comes up big and propels the Mustangs to victory. However this week, it was the defense coming up with 2 key stops and preventing UH from getting in field goal range 2 possessions in a row for the win. Final Score: 34-31

Baylor – Bye Week

TCU – TCU came up huge this week with an in state win against the previous number one on our list. TCU didn’t just beat the Longhorns, they wore them down and then won by 10. Also, can the Big12 NOT fine teams that rush the field after a big win? That’s part of why college football will always be better than the NFL. Just let the fans enjoy a big win over a rival team and move on. Final Score: 37-27

Texas – At one point this season, Texas was in talks for one of the 4 playoff spots. Now, they’ll be lucky to get to the Big12 championship and get their rematch with OU. After their 3rd loss of the season and their 2nd in conference loss, they are on the outside looking in. Final Score: 37-27

Texas A&M – A&M beat a struggling Mississippi State team that also has losses to Kansas State and Tennessee. This outcome was to be expected and the Aggies didn’t disappoint. Final Score: 49-30

Texas Tech – It really doesn’t get any worse than this ending for Tech. The game is tied, Kansas has the ball at their own 26 yard line needing a field goal to win with just under 4 minutes left in the game to do it. Kansas drives all the way down the field to the Texas Tech 22 yard line with just 13 seconds left and sets up for the game winning field goal. The kick is BLOCKED and Texas Tech recovers. During the return, instead of just going down and taking the game to overtime, the Tech returner tries to lateral the ball to a teammate to keep the return alive and fumbles the ball!! Kansas recovers with just 1 second left in the game and kicks the game winning field goal. Wow, just wow. Final Score: 37-34

University of Houston – UH actually looked decent this week against SMU. They took the game down to the wire and had 2 opportunities to either tie with a field goal or take the lead with a TD with 2:10 left in the game. Unfortunately, the Cougars fell short and fell to 3-5 on the season after the loss to their in-conference rival SMU. Final Score: 34-31

University of North Texas – If the Bobcats hadn’t lost to Arkansas State this week, they would have probably jumped UNT after this week’s performance. Somehow, UNT found a way to lose to Charlotte. Mason Fine threw for 5 touchdowns and UNT went into the 4th quarter with a 35-21 lead, but somehow found a way to lose the game after allowing Charlotte to outscore them 18-3 in the final quarter. Charlotte went for 2 on all 3 of their 4th quarter touchdowns, but failed on each attempt. Final Score: 39-38

Texas State – Another week, another let down. The Bobcats are having a hard time turning the corner under new head coach Jake Spavital. The Bobcats have been inconsistent this year and if you ever needed a reason to ignore the “transitive property,” this week was it. The Bobcats beat Georgia State a few weeks ago and fell to an Arkansas State team in blowout fashion that Georgia State blew out earlier in the year. College football is all about matchups and TXST was on the losing end of this one. Final Score: 38-14

UTSA – Bye Week

Rice – Rice doesn’t have a single FCS game on the schedule this year. So, while they have a worse record than UTEP below them, they don’t have the advantage of playing FCS Houston Baptist like the UTEP Miners do. Regardless, the Owls have lost every game this year and if they want to avoid finishing last on this list, they will need to beat the Miners to close out the season on November 30th. This week, they lost to Southern Miss. Final Score: 20-6

UTEP – As mentioned above, the Miners only win this season is against FCS Houston Baptist. They do have that matchup against Rice to close out the season and the opportunity to move up a spot in our rankings. This week they lost to Louisiana Tech. Final Score: 42-21
