Texas FBS Power Ranking: Week 2

This is the Maroon & Golden Power Rankings for the 12 Texas FBS teams. We will update this throughout the season as we learn more about each team in 2019. This ranking is a purely subjective ranking based on how each team is trending and who we think is better than the next.

Texas/Texas A&M – Combining these two for this week. Both had great showings against top 5 teams in the country. UT lost by a touchdown to LSU, now ranked #4 in the country. While A&M lost to the consensus #1 team in the nation, Clemson, by a score of 24-10. Both of these teams have clearly separated themselves from the rest of the Texas teams on this list. It will be fun to watch the rest of the season play out and see which one ends on top. #BringBackTheRivalry

Baylor – Giving Baylor the nod over TCU for this week. Baylor has a 2-0 record to start the season with a win over an FCS opponent and a bottom 30 FBS team, but at least they are blowing them out like you would expect.

TCU – Bye week

Texas Tech – Tech has a similar story to Baylor so far this season. Opened against an FCS in week one and beat a bottom 30 FBS team this week. They just haven’t looked as dominant in their games as Baylor has. Final scores for each matchup have still been pretty lopsided which is what you would expect.

SMU – SMU is looking better and better each week. Shane Buechele went 21-31, 292 YDS and 3 TD’s against the next team on this list, UNT. While last week’s game required a comeback in a hard fought close game, this week was never in doubt. SMU got out to an early 21-0 lead over UNT and never looked back on their way to a 49-27 victory.

University of Houston – UH had an interesting game against an FCS opponent this week. It was truly a tale of two halfs. UH got off to a fast start and built a lead of 34-10 by the end of the first half. Then, they only scored 3 points the rest of the game with several 3 and outs and turnovers. Final Score: 37-17 UH over Prairie View

University of North Texas – UNT is probably the biggest let down through the first 2 games of the season. They got the win over an FCS team last week after letting them sneak back into the game, then lose against an SMU team that was expected to be pretty average this year. Now, SMU could end up being much better than expected and it’s still very early in the season to say UNT won’t finish strong, but for a team we had ranked high going into the season, they aren’t performing up to expectations.

UTSA – UTSA got blown out by Baylor. I was expecting a closer matchup, but Baylor looks to be improved and the jury is still out on UTSA. Will this be Frank Wilson’s last season as the Roadrunners HC?

Texas State – What a rough game? The Bobcats started lightning fast with a quick TD drive that went 74 yards in less than 2 minutes. They followed it up with another 9 play drive that covered 43 yards before missing a field goal that would have put them up 10-0. It looked like the Bobcats were about to run away with this one. That is, until they caught a case of the turnover bug. Momentum quickly shifted from the Bobcats being dominant to the Bobcats just trying to hold on. It worked for a while as the Bobcats held a narrow lead until halfway through the 3rd quarter when they threw a pick 6 to give Wyoming their first lead of the game. At the end of the season, this will be a game that haunts the Bobcats and will be “one that got away.”

Rice – Rice got beat by Wake Forest 41-21 at home. They looked better against last week against an Army team that took Michigan to two overtimes this week. Rice should still be improved from last season, but haven’t done enough to move up the list at this point.

UTEP – Rounding off the list again this week is UTEP. They lost to Texas Tech 38-3 and while their defense performed better than expected, there wasn’t a whole lot else that looked good. They still have a few winnable games on their schedule, but if they want to move up and out of last place, they’re going to need to start winning.
