TXST Football Announces Additions to 2022 Class

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State football rounded out its 2022 newcomer class with the addition of five incoming freshmen and transfers, head coach Jake Spavital announced.

The second group of summer arrivals includes Baylor transfer and high school championship-winning quarterback CJ Rogers, SMU transfer Brian Holloway, Tulsa transfer tight end James Palmer, and junior college transfers Jackson Schultze and Javen Ware.

From a position group standpoint, there are three offensive players and two defensive players.

Brian Holloway

ILB | 6-0, 240 | SMU | Kilgore College | Clear Lake (TX) HS | League City, Texas

Seasons of eligibility: 2

A rising senior with two years of eligibility, Holloway joins Texas State after spending the last three seasons at SMU. With the Mustangs, he played in 26 career games from 2019 to 2021 and totaled 31 tackles and 2.5 TFLs. He started his collegiate career at Kilgore College, where he led the team in fumble recoveries in 2018 and registered 45 tackles, 4.0 TFLs and 1.5 sacks in 12 games.

James Palmer

TE | 6-1, 235 | Tulsa | Westmoore (OK) HS | Moore, Okla.

Seasons of eligibility: 2

An incoming redshirt junior, Palmer arrives in San Marcos with 35 career games played and 10 starts during his four years with Tulsa. Palmer, who redshirted in 2018 after playing in four games on special teams, has eight career catches and 117 career yards with one touchdown.

CJ Rogers

QB | 6-3,200 | Baylor | Argyle (TX) HS | Argyle, Texas

Seasons of eligibility: 4

A redshirt freshman, Rogers is transferring to the Bobcats after spending his freshman season at Baylor in 2021. The Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient did not appear in any games for the Bears in his true freshman season. During his prep career, Rogers led Argyle to a perfect 16-0 record and state championship in 2020 in his lone season as the starting quarterback. That year, he was named 4A Division I District 7 MVP, Dallas Morning-News 4A Player of the Year, and Padilla Poll 4A Division I Offensive Player of the Year after totaling 3,420 yards in the year and scoring 54 total touchdowns (48 passing, 6 rushing).

Jackson Schultze

OL | 6-7, 300 | Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College | Broken Arrow (OK) HS | Broken Arrow, Okla.

Seasons of eligibility: 4

Another redshirt freshman, Schultze will join Texas State after spending the 2021 season at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College. In high school, Schultze helped Broken Arrow capture the 2018 Oklahoma 6A-Division I state championship.

Javen Ware

DB | 5-11, 180 | Coahoma (MS) Community College | Hernando (MS) HS | Hernando, Miss.

Seasons of eligibility: 3

An incoming sophomore, Ware played in seven games last year as a freshman with Coahoma Community College in Coahoma County, Mississippi. As a defensive back, he had 13 tackles (8 solo), five pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Texas State’s 2022 class of newcomers closed out at 32 players, including 14 announced in June and 13 in February.

The Bobcats will add a group of walk-ons when they start official practices on August 3.

The Bobcats will return 19 starters from last year’s team. They open the season on the road at Nevada on September 3 while the home opener is set for September 10 against FIU (6 pm kickoff).

Texas State will also take part in next week’s Sun Belt Conference Football Media Days in New Orleans on Wednesday, July 27.
