Figured we should probably get this one going - better late than never, eh?

Some good SATX vs ATX matchups this week w/ Judson at Westlake and Steel at Lake Travis.

As much as I believe in my west Austin suburbia teams, this might be a weekend for SA to flex on 'em. Westlake doesn't have a legit QB for the first time since like 1974 and apparently half the Lake Travis team is out w/ Covid.

Game of the week in this area is between two teams that made playoff runs last year. 2A DI Shiner travels to Vanderbilt to take on the 3A DI Industrial Cobras.
Both teams are 0-1 with Shiner falling 41-8 to 3A Hallettsville and Industrial falling to Yoakum 36-14. Industrial is fighting through some internal administration issues regarding an incident that transpired during the baseball playoffs back in the spring. 4 players (who have since graduated) have been charged with engaging in organized criminal activity assault.

Battle of the Lakes this week. Will be a good one. Playing at LT for the first time in a while. LT looking to make some noise and Westlake with some questions on the offensive side of the ball. LT calling for a blackout game so stadium should be rocking. Senior QB will get the start and a ton of reps. Super Soph QB could be interesting to watch if he is called on. Defense is as strong as ever for the Chaps on a team with more than 50 Seniors. LT trying to find their old identity. Could be a low 21-10 game with Chaps on top.

LOL! Yeah. If I would have posted that people wouldn't have believed it!! There are a lot of seniors on this team.

I didn't believe it when I read it last week! I don't know why - the last time I was really paying attention, there were something like 300 boys on 5 teams over there. Not sure what the overall numbers are these days, but 61 SR tells me that's still a healthy program.

Westlake football at Anderson this week. They are at the point in the season where the play chart has a ton of kids on it. Drip next week for the Chaps. A hand full of match ups worth keeping an eye on around the state in 6A and 5A. But a lot of yawners also... Guess five more weeks until playoffs and we can dust off this thread a little more.

Saw that Aledo meme. Crazy! The have such a strong program and I know the underclassmen are gonna be good when they get up to Varsity. They keep a relationship with the brothers that won all the state championships and they are regularly around the younger kids and underclassmen.

Drip tonight for Westlake. Look for the Sophomore at Westlake to sling it around. Seems like they are starting to open up the playbook for him. The Westlake defense will give Drip fits.

Lavaca River Showdown tonight between the 7th ranked Edna Cowboys (5-1-1, 3-0) and the Industrial Cobras (4-2, 2-1) at the Snake Pit in Vanderbilt. The Cowboys won in convincing fashion last year 46-0. Edna is rolling along nicely this year with their only loss against 2A Refugio in OT on a controversial call late in the game. The tie is from their game against Sinton which was called due to weather. The Cobras seem to be very inconsistent this year. Losing to a pretty decent Yoakum team by 22 (36-14) and to district counterpart Goliad by 20 (28-8). They came out very flat against the Tigers and continually shot themselves in the foot. Goliad went to the triple option in the second half and played keep away in the second half. I think Industrial only had their hands on the ball twice in the second half. May have been three but it was with little time left on the clock. Edna made a deep run in the playoffs last year before losing to eventual state champion Franklin in the semifinals. I think the Cowboys win this one easily as they are just better athletically. However, with any rivalry game anything can happen.

Edna jumped out to a 21-0 lead early on three big scores over 50 yds. Industrial fought back to cut it to 21-14 as time expired in the first half. Industrial received the KO to start the 2nd half. On the 3rd play from scrimmage the QB throws an int and Edna scores on the first play. The Cobras receive the ensuing KO and on the first play the RB fumbles. Edna strikes through the air on the first play go make it 35-14. They ran two plays and scored two TD's. First play from scrimmage after the KO the Cobras strike with a 75yd TD. Three total TD's in less than 3 minutes. Later on the Industrial QB throws another int resulting in a pick six. Edna wins 56-35. The game was actually much closer than the scoreboard shows. Industrial just made way too many stupid mistakes that they couldn't overcome. All I know is that Edna is tall, big and athletic but to me they play lackadaisical. They will have to play with a little better enthusiasm if they want to go far in the playoffs.

On another note keep an eye out for Joe Richard Castellano down at Alice in his first year as HC. He turned around a dismal Taft Greyhounds team and was named the HC for the Coyotes back in the spring. They knocked off the Calallen Wildcats 21-7 tonight and are 5-1 on the year, 3-0 in district. The Greyhounds were 7-23 the previous 3 seasons before his arrival. In his first year they went 4-7 and made the playoffs. The next 3 years they went 8-4, 8-3, and 10-3. He seems to be having some success after spending 21 years as an assistant at several schools.

Sounds like it was exactly the opposite. Chaps w/ the win, but not looking like the team of the last couple years at all.

Drips offense is legit averaging almost 40 a game. HUGE OLine and a WR and RB making plays. Drip did only score twice which is the second lowest output behind a 7 spot from Vandy. (Vandy is really good) Drip did put up more yards. Westlake offense ran the ball a lot more, looking somewhat pedestrian. It seems Drips defense was setting up in a similar scheme to what ULM did to TXST Saturday. Dropping a bunch into coverage. This Drip/Westlake game was a really good game. Drip should give LT a run this week and they get LT at home. That Drip stadium can bring the energy, that game should be a really good game to watch.
