McCoil, Sr. Promoted to Defensive Coordinator
TXST Release:
SAN MARCOS, Texas – After helping Texas State win its first bowl game in school history this past season, Dexter McCoil, Sr. has been elevated to defensive coordinator, head coach GJ Kinne announced on Friday.
McCoil was promoted to the defensive coordinator role after serving as the Bobcats’ safeties coach in 2023. He helped Shawn Holton earn All-Sun Belt Honorable Mention and Kaleb Culp earn All-Texas Second Team honors from Dave Campbell’s as the two were among the leading tacklers for the Texas State defense.
“Coach McCoil is a winner and a great leader of men,” said Kinne. “The relationships and trust that he has with our players and coaches is something that stood out during the interview process. He has a great energy with our guys, and his experience as a coach and as an NFL player will be huge in elevating our defense.”
In his first season at Texas State in 2023, McCoil helped develop a group of safeties who were in their first season with the Bobcats and at the FBS level after team captain Tory Spears went down with an injury early in the season.
Holton and Culp, who were both starters that transferred in from UIW, wreaked havoc in the secondary. Holton was tied for third in the country in forced fumbles while Culp was first in fumbles recovered. Both helped the Bobcats finish 26th in the nation in turnovers gained. Holton and Culp were also second and third on the team, respectively, in tackles.
McCoil played professional football for nine years, including three years in the NFL and four years in the CFL. In 2014, he was named the CFL Rookie of the Year and helped the Edmonton Eskimos win the 2015 Grey Cup. In the NFL, he played for the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers.
Following his playing career, McCoil coached high school in his home state of Louisiana before working with Kinne at UIW in 2022.
